ARE YOU TOO TIRED TO THINK STRAIGHT?

When last have you felt fully alert? How many times has someone asked you to do something and you’ve said (or wanted to say), “Sorry, I don’t have the energy.” You’re not alone in being frustrated by this feeling of powerlessness. More and more of us have the same complaint.

Here are some tips to claim back your power and break out of fatigue.

Power Place – Spend at least a few minutes wherever you can in one of your favourite rooms in your home or workplace, or stepping outside into a nearby garden or park where you feel most “at home”. If you can’t get there physically, you may still get some energising benefits by imagining that you are there.

Enjoy a Burst of Light – More than half your body’s sense receptors are clustered n your eyes. For an energy lift, turn up the lights. Many people report a sense of calmness followed by a surge of energy when exposed to bright sunlight or some extra indoor light.

Use those Muscles – Nearly any type of muscular activity – such as walking up a flight of stairs can immediately increase your energy and alertness. Taking a walk, stretching or even chewing gum can stimulate your level of alertness.

Keep it Cool – Something as simple as a cool, fresh breeze or some cold water splashed on the face and neck can be quick, effective ways to get an invigorating rush of circulation that promotes alertness.

Sniff, sniff, sniff … - Smell, in some cases, can strongly influence mental alertness. The human nose, with practice, may be able to discern more than 7 500 different fragrances. And the sense of smell is so powerfully connected to the brain that some scents elicit pronounced changes in energy, emotions and memory. To date, the top scent for raising energy and attention seems to be peppermint. Lemon is another option.

Laugh – There is strong scientific reasons to suspect that he or she who laughs, lasts. A quick infusion of light-heartedness won’t only boost your energy but may help make you more helpful towards others and improve cognitive processes such as judgement, problem solving and decision-making. Scientist theorise that laughter stimulates the production of brain catecholamines and endorphins, which affect hormonal levels in the body, some related to feelings of joy, an easing of pain and strengthened immune responses.

“It’s a funny thing about life, if you refuse to accept the best,  you very often get it” - Somerset Maugham

Until next time, be gentle with yourself.
